Kitchen Sink Styles Explained

  • Copper kitchen sinks: Before I say anything else, I have to say that copper kitchen sinks are incredibly good-looking and classy, so apart from everything, they are great additions to a kitchen. Copper sinks are made of solid copper and have a natural patina that makes them either weathered copper or dark bronze copper. Some copper sinks may have a polished and satin nickel finish. Since most manufacturers use an extra thick casting, it enables the copper to be virtually noiseless as well as scratch-resistant. Besides, copper sinks are also resistant to stains and discoloration, and keep bacteria at bay, thus adding to the hygiene quotient of your kitchen. Maintenance is a cinch, too, because copper kitchen sinks can be easily re-polished. And, of course, copper is rust-free.

  • Granite kitchen sinks: Once again, it is hard to find an equal for granite when it comes to durability and ease of maintenance. Simply put, granite kitchen sinks do not dent, scratch, chip, or stain. That is because most granite kitchen sinks are made of extremely durable granite composite material that is nearly 100 per cent fade-proof and bears a solid color throughout. Over and above everything, granite kitchen sinks can resist temperatures of up to 280 degrees Celsius. The major issue about granite kitchen sinks is that they are very expensive, but are also completely scratch-resistant.

  • Acrylic kitchen sinks: Like the other durable materials discussed above, acrylic is non-absorbent and non-porous, as well as anti-chipping and scratch-resistant. This is primarily because the rock particles coating an acrylic kitchen sink surface are so compact that it makes it virtually impossible to crack. One must admit, though, that acrylic sinks, which are initially resistant to stains, too, may cease to be so after years of use. On the credit side, however, is the fact that, like granite, acrylic kitchen sinks can withstand temperatures of up to 280 degrees Celsius. Also, acrylic is a great sound-damper so you have a kitchen sink that is almost totally noiseless. And these days, manufacturers put in germ-fighting properties in their acrylic kitchen sinks, so you get a value add in the form of extra hygiene.

  • Cast iron kitchen sinks: These sinks are made of cast metal and finished with a porcelain material, which gives them that lovely glow. The porcelain finish lasts for the longest time, and continues to look good. However, cast iron kitchen sinks don’t come cheap. Besides, they are really, really, heavy and by far the most difficult to install, a process that usually requires expert help.
